The Alsea estuary provides excellent habitat for birds, harbor seals, and the occasional sea lion. Pelicans fish at the mouth of the bay, and deer occasionally are seen on the beach searching for salt and seaweed. As the river winds inland through the coastal rainforest, elk and eagles, river otters and water fowl frequent the water's edge.

Wildlife can be seen at any point along the Alsea Bay or River. The sites below have designated viewing areas:


Keady Wayside

Day use area with wildlife viewing of harbor seals, migratory and non-migratory birds. Located at the southern end of the City of Waldport, on Alsea Bay, Keady Wayside has a newly constructed viewing platform, picnic tables and beach access.



Nelson Wayside State Park / Eckman Lake

Day use area with wildlife viewing of migratory & non- migratory birds, picnicking, fishing, nonmotorized boat access, public restrooms; 2.7 miles east on Hwy 34.
